Tom Cavanagh, who portrays Eobard Thawne, a.k.a. Reverse-Flash on The Flash, confirms he is directing Superman & Lois season 3, episode 1.
A major The Flash actor will direct Superman & Lois season 3, episode 1. Superman & Lois has had an eventful year, as the Arrowverse drama brought in its own take on DC’s Bizarro World. While it seemed like Bizarro was initially the Big Bad of season 2, Superman & Lois went with a different Man of Steel villain through Ally Allston, one of the Parasites in the comics. Dubbed as the Inverse World, Superman & Lois season 2 has re-introduced the Multiverse concept, as the heroes of Earth-Prime have been under the belief that their world is all that is left after Crisis on Infinite Earths.
The last few episodes of Superman & Lois season 2 have started to bring everything full circle. While Clark is currently in recovery mode, Ally has begun the process of seeing Earth-Prime merged with the Inverse World. With the season 2 season finale coming up, it will be at least six months before Superman & Lois season 3 arrives on The CW. While it was one of two Arrowverse shows to be renewed for another year, Superman & Lois season 3, along with The Flash season 9, is being saved for 2023. Tom Cavanagh plays Eobard Thawne, aka the Reverse-Flash, in Superman & Lois‘ fellow Arrowverse series.
Even though the wait for Superman & Lois season 3 will be a long one, some exciting details are already starting to roll in. In an interview with TV Insider, Cavanagh confirmed he will be directing Superman & Lois season 3, episode 1. This will mark Cavanagh’s second directing role on Superman & Lois. While Cavanagh couldn’t reveal any details, The Flash star talked about the experience of returning to the Arrowverse series to direct another episode.
“Yeah. I was doing the finale of The Flash and it was like, “All right, well what else is available?” And they were asking about the premiere and I mean, that show has the advantage of the anamorphic lenses and that visual richness. So for a director, it’s just such a joy to go there and have those tools at your disposal. And that’s just the technical side, not even mentioning the tremendous cast and crew, and joy with which they kind of tackle their stories. So, yeah I’m really looking forward to jumping back in the seat to do their premiere.”
Cavanagh’s first time directing on Superman & Lois was the season 1 finale, “Last Sons of Krypton.” However, Cavanagh’s duties behind the camera isn’t the first time a popular Arrowverse actor from another show has “crossed over” to helm an episode of Superman & Lois. Arrow star David Ramsey, who portrays Arrowverse’s John Diggle/Spartan, led his first Superman & Lois episode back in season 1 for “Man of Steel.” Ramsey, who will reprise the role of Diggle in next week’s Superman & Lois season 2 finale, also directed episodes “The Ties That Bind” and “Truth and Consequences.”
Even though Superman & Lois has been restrictive with doing traditional Arrowverse crossovers on the screen, it is interesting to see that actors who have also become directors do crossover to helm an episode or two. Despite the lack of connections to the wider franchise, Superman & Lois season 2 finale will be answering those Arrowverse questions, which may open the door for more interconnectivity in season 3. With Sam Lane set to be the one to clarify what Superman & Lois‘ place in the Arrowverse is, time will tell what this does for future seasons. In the meantime, Superman & Lois season 3, episode 1 from Cavanagh is the only Arrowverse crossover that audiences have confirmed.
